Number of dengue patients go up again

The number of people identified with dengue infection has been going up and down over the last seven days. 

In last 24 hours 1,626 dengue patients were admitted to different hospitals, a slight increase from 1,572 in the preceding 24 hours.

Health Emergency Operations and Control Room of the Directorate of Health Services (DGHS) data showed that on August 15   the number of dengue patients in the past 24 hours was 1,933; the next day, the number came down to 1,721; on August 17, the number of dengue patients admitted in hospitals in the past 24 hours stood at 1,460; on August 18, the number of dengue patients increased, once again, to 1,706; then the number showed a downward trend in the next two days: on August 19 and 20, the addition to the number of individuals infected with dengue stood at 1,615 and 1,572 respectively; the number of dengue-infected patients increased, once again, in last 24 hours to 1,626. 

The DGHS says, 1,626 dengue patients have been admitted in the hospitals across the country in the last 24 hours (from Tuesday, 8 am, to Wednesday, 8 am). Of them, 711 have been admitted in 41 government and private hospitals in the capital, while 915 have been admitted in the hospitals outside Dhaka. 

At present 6,278 dengue patients are being treated in different government and private hospitals across the country (3,360 in Dhaka and 2,918 in hospitals outside the capital).

The number of dengue patients decreased slightly over the last few days, but time has not come, as yet, to say that the intensity of the disease is on the decline for good. The dengue season starts in June and peaks in September.  It starts to recede in October.  According to this, the ‘peak period’ of dengue is yet to commence. 

This year dengue started to escalate in the capital at the onset of monsoon with the number of dengue patients surpassing the number of patients in the whole of the last year. 

The DGHS sources said, 57,995 dengue patients have been admitted in hospitals since January of this year. Of them, as many as 39,534 dengue infected patients have been admitted in 21 days of August.

The Health Directorate has completed the process of ‘death review’ on 80 deaths, and confirmed 47 deaths were from dengue so far.  However, unofficial sources say, the figure has crossed 140.

Earlier in 2000, the highest 93 deaths from dengue was recorded throughout the country. 

Two die of dengue on Wednesday

A woman and a child died of dengue fever at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and the Apollo Hospital on Wednesday. 

A woman named Naina (27) died at DMCH.  DMCH Director Brigadier General AKM Nasir Uddin informed this at a press conference Wednesday afternoon.  Naina came from Dayaganj in Gandaria of Dhaka.  

DMCH Director Brigadier General AKM Nasir Uddin told the press conference that apart from dengue Naina had been suffering from some other physical problems.  He said some specimen from her body was sent to a laboratory for test to confirm her death from dengue.

Earlier in the morning a school student named Shahmoon Siraj died from dengue while undergoing treatment at the ICU of the Apollo Hospital in the capital. He was a sixth grader at Milestone School in the city’s Uttara.  
Shahmoon was admitted in the Apollo Hospital on August 18.  He was shifted to the ICU on August 19.
