No constitutional bar to contesting elections while serving as attorney general: Asaduzzaman
His remarks came a day after he announced his intention to resign from the post and contest the upcoming national election as a BNP candidate.
Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman has said there is no constitutional barrier preventing him from contesting in the national election while still holding the attorney general position.
"The attorney general is not a government employee. According to Article 64 of the Constitution, the attorney general is the legal counsel for the state. It is not a government service post," he told journalists after a state appeal hearing regarding the caretaker government issue today (6 November).
"Therefore, there is no legal obstacle to contesting in an election, even while serving as attorney general," Asaduzzaman added.

He further said, "As long as I hold the position, I serve as the state's lawyer and apply the laws of the state. If any action by the government harms the state's interests, the attorney general can stand against it."
His remarks came a day after he announced his intention to resign from the post and contest the upcoming national election as a BNP candidate.
When asked whether he would contest from the Jhenaidah-1 constituency, Asaduzzaman said, "Yes, I will contest. I have sought nomination from that area. I will contest the election, and I will resign from the post when the time comes."
Responding to another question about whether he has been confirmed as a BNP nominee, he said confidently, "I am optimistic — one hundred percent."
Md Asaduzzaman was appointed attorney general on 5 August last year following the July Uprising. Before his appointment, he served as the Human Rights Affairs secretary of the BNP's central committee.
According to party sources, he is expected to contest from Jhenaidah-1 (Shailkupa upazila) under the sheaf of paddy symbol. Since assuming office, he has remained politically active in his constituency, attending various public events and outreach programmes.
Earlier, on 3 November, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the party's list of 237 candidates for the upcoming national election.
He noted that of Jhenaidah's four constituencies, one has a declared candidate, while three, including Jhenaidah-1, remain open.
