Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, who led her party to a thumping victory in the national elections on 7 January, will take her oath as prime minister for the fourth straight term and form her cabinet on Thursday.

"The new cabinet will be sworn in at Bangabhaban at 7pm on Thursday," said Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq during a press briefing at the secretariat on Tuesday.

The AL has bagged 222 seats out of 298 in the parliamentary polls. According to sources at the Speaker's office, the Parliament Secretariat is making preparations for holding the oath-taking of the lawmakers today.

After taking the oath at 10am, the AL parliamentary party will formally elect Sheikh Hasina as their leader and communicate its decision with the president to appoint her as prime minister, for the fifth time since her first term in 1996.

The president will administer the oath to the new prime minister, who will then advise the head of state to appoint ministers and state ministers, handpicked by her, to form the new cabinet.

However, he did not disclose the specific number of lawmakers who will serve as ministers or the composition of the cabinet.

In the meantime, the EC issued gazettes announcing the winners on Tuesday.

Independent candidates will play a role in forming the opposition: Law minister

Meanwhile, speaking at the press briefing, Anisul Huq said the independent candidates who came victorious will play a role in the formation of the opposition party in parliament.

Among others, Jatiyo Party candidates were victorious in 11 seats, and three single candidates each from three parties – Bangladesh Workers Party, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, and Bangladesh Kalyan Party –  secured victory in their respective constituencies.
