NCP leader allegedly attacked in Narayanganj over protest against illegal soil excavation
Halim Azad, however, denied the allegations and described them as completely baseless.
A National Citizen Party (NCP) leader in Narayanganj was allegedly attacked at Baktabali Bazar under Fatullah police station yesterday (28 September) after protesting against illegal soil excavation in the area.
The victim, Taohidul Islam Taohid, joint organising secretary of the Narayanganj district NCP, alleged that the attack was carried out under the leadership of Halim Azad, organising secretary of the Baktabali Union BNP.
Narayanganj district NCP convener Zubair Sardar said their leaders and activists had gone to a police outpost earlier in the day to request action against those involved in illegal soil excavation.
"In the evening, 10 to 15 people attacked Taohid after finding him alone. They used locally made weapons and injured his head. He was taken to a hospital in the city for treatment. We will take legal action over the incident," he said.
Taohid alleged that Halim Azad, along with his brother Yasin Arafat and associates Nayan, Emon, Jewel and Abul Khayer, among others, assaulted him with machetes and steel pipes.
"I was with a few juniors. When they tried to intervene, they were also beaten," he said.
Halim Azad, however, denied the allegations and described them as completely baseless.
"I am currently far from Baktabali. I heard about the incident involving NCP leader Taohid, but I am being unnecessarily dragged into it," he said.
Fatullah Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahbub Alam said police had been sent to the scene.
"The matter will be investigated and necessary action will be taken," he said.
