NCP leader Akhter Hossen gets bail in two cases after surrender

National Citizen Party Member Secretary Akhter Hossen has been granted bail in two separate cases filed at Shahbagh Police Station on charges including attempted murder, rioting, unlawful assembly, and obstruction of government work.
The courts of Dhaka's additional chief metropolitan magistrates, Awlad Hossain Mohammad Junaid and Jashita Islam, passed the order today (28 December) following hearings, after the NCP leader appeared before the courts and surrendered in the two cases filed in 2021, seeking bail.
Akhter's lawyer, Md Mujahidur Islam, confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.
After the hearings, the two courts granted him bail in the respective cases on bonds of Tk500 and Tk1,000, the lawyer added. He further said that a total of six cases were filed against Akhter during the tenure of the Awami League government.
Of those, he has already been exempted in four cases, while bail was secured in the remaining two through today's surrender.
According to the case statements, three separate cases were filed against Akhter at Shahbagh Police Station in 2021 in connection with protests against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bangladesh.
On 13 April 2021, Akhter was distributing iftar items among the underprivileged in the Dhaka University area during Ramadan. At the time, law enforcement personnel arrested him in front of the Central Shaheed Minar and subsequently showed him arrested in the Shahbagh police station cases.
