Murder case accused Chhatra League leader arrested in Cumilla
Despite being a fugitive and accused in multiple murder cases, Rubel had been vocal on social media over the past months, allegedly spreading false information against the interim government through social media
Police have arrested Saiful Islam Rubel, the general secretary of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League's Cumilla North district unit, for his alleged involvement in two murders and attempted murders during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement last year.
Rubel was detained from his home in Brahmonkhara village under Barkamta Union of Debidwar upazila at around 2am today (18 February), said Debidwar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shamsuddin Mohammad Elyas.
"For security reasons, Rubel has been kept in the Detective Branch's custody. He will be sent to jail through the court this afternoon," he added.
Following the fall of the Awami League government, Rubel went into hiding for a long time. He reportedly returned home secretly on Monday night, and acting on a tip-off, a team from Debidwar Police Station conducted a raid and arrested him.
Despite being a fugitive and accused in multiple murder cases, Rubel had been vocal on social media over the past months, allegedly spreading false information against the interim government through social media posts, according to the police and locals.
Rubel is one of the accused in three separate cases filed by the families of Abdur Razzak Rubel, a bus driver, and Sabbir Hossain, a tenth-grade student, who were killed during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement at Debidwar New Market on 4 and 5 August.
Rubel is also accused in multiple cases filed over attempted murder charges.
