Multiple road accidents cause four deaths and over 25 injured
Munshiganj, Madaripur, Dinajpur, and Gazipur saw major traffic delays and incidents yesterday due to multiple accidents
At least four people died and more than 25 others were injured in separate road accidents across the country today (19 February).
In Munshiganj, a man died and another was injured when a truck collided with the back of a parked vehicle on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway in Srinagar upazila early this morning. Police and Fire Service officials said the parked truck had stopped due to mechanical problems when another truck coming from the same direction lost control and rammed into it.
The collision left the truck driver, Md Shawkat Bepari, 23, son of Dabir Bepari of Kazirhat area under Jazira Upazila in Shariatpur district, dead, while his helper, Imran Mondol, 24, son of Abdul Aziz of Mordoh (Bangal) area in Ullapara Upazila of Sirajganj district, was trapped but later rescued using hydraulic equipment by the Fire Service.
The injured were first taken to Srinagar Upazila Health Complex for treatment before Mondol was referred to Dhaka for advanced care. Muhammad Shafiqul Islam, deputy assistant director of Munshiganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, said traffic on the expressway was suspended for about an hour but later resumed.
On the Dhaka-Barishal highway in Dasar upazila of Madaripur district, a head-on collision between two passenger buses left two people dead and 20 others injured.
The accident occurred around 11am in the Melkai area when a BRTC bus from Kuakata collided with a Sohag Paribahan bus travelling from Dhaka to Barishal. The drivers of the BRTC bus and a van on the highway died instantly at the scene.
Among the injured, eight were admitted to the 250-bed Madaripur District Hospital in critical condition, including Azmina (40), Zainul (23), Tuhin (20), Russel (22), Abdul Kader (65), Robiul Islam (37), Sadeq (60), and one unidentified person.
Others received primary treatment. ASI Abdur Razzak, police in charge of Madaripur Sadar Hospital, confirmed the incident. Traffic was temporarily halted, causing a long jam, before authorities cleared the buses and reopened the highway.
In Dinajpur, a schoolboy, Junayed, 6, died and five others were injured when a bus of 'Ahad Paribahan' hit a school van carrying students at Amtali Bridge in Chirirbandar upazila. The accident occurred around 8am while the van was heading toward Dinajpur district town.
The deceased was a KG student at Amtali Molla School and son of Md Jewel of Palashdangi village. The injured students were rushed to Dinajpur Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Sub-inspector Md Mainul of Chirirbandar Police Station confirmed the incident.
In Gazipur, a railway police officer was seriously injured after being hit by a train at Joydebpur Rail Station today. The injured officer, Sub-inspector Habib, was walking along line No 4 while talking on his mobile phone when a train struck him, severing his right arm and right leg, according to Md Kaiyum Ali, officer-in-charge of Joydebpur Railway Police Outpost.
Habib was initially taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
