MP-elect from BNP turns over own party’s activists to police over post-election disorder in Chandpur
Five activists of the BNP student wing Chhatra Dal were turned over to Chandpur Model Police Station under the supervision of municipal Chhatra Dal General Secretary Faiz Dhali.
Newly elected BNP lawmaker from Chandpur-3 Sk Farid Ahmed Manik has turned over several activists from his own party to the police following allegations of creating disorder after the 13th general election.
According to local sources, tensions flared between two groups armed with locally made weapons in ward No 13 of Chandpur municipality during polling on Thursday (12 February) and again after the vote yesterday. Authorities identified those involved last night in an effort to restore order.
Later, five activists of the BNP student wing Chhatra Dal were turned over to Chandpur Model Police Station under the supervision of municipal Chhatra Dal General Secretary Faiz Dhali.
Three of them are Nahidul Islam Jony, 22, Mobarak Hossain Bepari, 26, and Jony Gazi, 30. Later that night, two more youths, Monir and Fahim, were also turned in from the Wireless Bazar area.
Chandpur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Faiz Ahmed said the detainees have been kept in police custody. Legal action will be taken against them after verification, he added.
The BNP's Farid bagged 1,65,404 votes in the election, while his nearest rival Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Md Shahjahan Miah secured 1,00,865 votes.
