An elderly woman, Sabjan Khatun was being confined to a goat shed by her son in Delbaria village of Faridpur's Nagarkanda upazila, before the local authorities took action.

Khatun, widow of Hamid Sheikh, had been kept in such horrible conditions by her youngest son, Abul Kalam, and his family.

She was reportedly denied adequate food and care, and routinely locked away.

The situation escalated when she was forced to live in a goat shed, sparking outrage on social media and triggering an immediate response from the upazila administration.

"I will keep my mother as I see fit. Why should others interfere?" said Abul Kalam, justifying his actions.

He further claimed, "My mother does not listen to us, which is why she was confined."
Upon learning of the situation, Nagarkanda Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Kafi Bin Kabir and other officials visited the spot.

"We witnessed a heartbreaking scene of extreme inhumanity — a human being forced to live among animals," said UNO Kabir.

The upazila administration immediately provided essential supplies for Sabjan Khatun.

In collaboration with the district administrator, they arranged for two bundles of tin and funds to construct a new dwelling for Sabjan Khatun, separate from the animal enclosure.

The Upazila Social Service Office also provided a wheelchair and an allowance card.

Kodalia Shahidnagar Union Chairman Khandaker Zakir Hossain Nilu said the union parishad will take all necessary measures to support the elderly woman.

UNO Kabir also addressed the failure of local ward members and village police to report the abuse.
