Mosque-temple in same compound stands as testament to communal harmony

In the district town of Lalmonirhat, a mosque and a temple standing side by side within the same compound have become a unique testament to Bangladesh's century-old tradition of communal harmony.

Located in the Kalibari area of Lalmonirhat town, the Puran Bazar Jame Mosque and the Kalibari Central Temple have served for generations as shining examples of religious tolerance.

On one side, the sounds of gongs, bells and _ulu-dhwani_ (ceremonial ululation) resonate, while just six feet away, the sacred call to prayer, known as the _Adhan_, rings out.

There are no walls or artificial divisions. Places of worship for two different faiths stand facing each other in the same courtyard, with mutual respect.

Talking to BSS, President of the Puran Bazar Jame Mosque Committee Amirul Hayat Ahmed Bakul and President and Head Priest of Kalibari Central Temple Shankar Chakraborty recounted the history of the mosque and the temple, which together stand as a unique example of harmony and brotherhood.

They said the Kalibari Central Temple was established there in 1836.

Later, a market began operating in the area. In 1900, local traders and pious Muslims established the mosque beside the temple for their religious observances, in consultation with members of the Sanatan community.

Since then, members of the two communities have peacefully carried out their respective religious activities at the two places of worship without any disputes, setting a remarkable example of communal harmony.

Members of the Sanatan community are now celebrating Sharodiyo Durga Puja, their greatest religious festival, with ululation and music in one part of the compound, while Muslims perform their five daily prayers and other religious rituals in another part of the courtyard.

When the _Muazzin_ announces the _Adhan_, calling Muslims to prayer, members of the Sanatan community stop their worship activities at the Puja mandap as a mark of respect for their Muslim neighbours.

In this way, the two places of worship have continued to uphold religious freedom and promote communal harmony for more than a century.

President and Head Priest of Kalibari Central Temple Shankar Chakraborty said there had been no conflict between the two communities for more than a century, adding that a spirit of deep mutual respect and exemplary discipline prevailed there.

"Our ancestors taught us how to respect other faiths. As soon as the Adhan is heard, our drummers spontaneously stop playing. This has become an integral part of our own beliefs," Shankar Chakraborty said.

President of the Puran Bazar Jame Mosque Committee Amirul Hayat Ahmed Bakul said, "We cooperate with the temple authorities, and they also cooperate with us. This bond of harmony has continued for generations without any discord."

"For generations, we have conducted religious activities side by side in complete peace. In accordance with the teachings of Islam, this site stands as an exemplary model of respecting the rights of neighbours and showing respect for other religions," he said.

The site represents not only Lalmonirhat but also serves as a broader national example of religious coexistence. The shared courtyard is a rare symbol of communal harmony and continues to attract visitors curious about its history.

Pesh Imam of the mosque Moulana Mohammad Alauddin said there had never been any disturbance during prayers.

"At a time when religious intolerance often makes headlines, the mosque and temple in Lalmonirhat continue to stand together as a quiet testament to mutual respect and humanity," he said.

General Secretary of Kalibari Central Temple Shree Gobind Saha said people from both religious communities had never witnessed any religion-based disputes, problems, unrest or disagreements in the area.

"The temple and mosque committees sit together and make decisions before Durga Puja begins. Accordingly, all sound-producing activities, including the use of loudspeakers and drums at the temple, remain suspended from the time of the Adhan until the prayers are over," Gobind Saha said.

Local residents Sanat Chandra Saha, Gopal Chandra, Jalal Uddin and Mahbubar Rahman said they had known the shared place of worship since the time of their forefathers.

Prayers and Puja rituals have been taking place in the same courtyard for generations. Once the Muslim prayers are over, worship resumes at the temple. The Adhan and prayers do not take long.

"To this day, there has never been any conflict or unpleasant incident here. While individuals may follow different faiths, the bond of harmony and love belongs to us all," Sanat Chandra Saha said.

This historic site in Lalmonirhat is no longer merely a place of worship for local residents; it has also become a unique destination for pilgrims and visitors from far and wide.

Visitors arriving from various parts of the country are deeply moved by this display of national unity, religious harmony, peace and brotherhood.

In today's world, where conflicts frequently make headlines, this shared space in Lalmonirhat serves as a living example of peace, humanity and brotherhood.

Several foreign ambassadors have already visited this historic mosque and temple to witness the peaceful coexistence of the two places of worship within the same compound.
