MJF condemns harassment of journalist Rozina Islam

Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) has strongly condemned the physical and mental harassment suffered by Prothom Alo journalist Rozina Islam during her detention at the Secretariat for a lengthy period of time.

The human rights organisation voiced their condemnation in a press release on Tuesday and demanded immediate release of Rozina.

The on-duty journalist visited the health ministry at the Secretariat on Monday around 3:30pm. At one stage, she was detained and harassed there for five hours, which is unconstitutional, the release said.

On the issue, MJF Executive Director Shaheen Anam said, "We condemn the incident involving the lengthy detention of a journalist, especially a female one, inside a room at the Health Service Division.

"Rozina had fallen ill during her detention because she did not get any medical assistance. This is inhumane. We demand a speedy investigation of the incident, and those involved must be brought to justice."

Rozina had taken the second dose of Covid-19 vaccine that day and fell ill while suffering harassment during her five-hour detention at the Secretariat. Her phone was confiscated and she was taken to a police station instead of a hospital.

The journalist was produced before a court the next morning, and the series of incidents have affected her mentally and physically, the release said.
