Metro rail services resume after 5-hour staff protest

Metro rail services resumed at 8:15pm today (12 December) from Uttara North station, ending a 5-hour halt caused by a full work stoppage by officers and employees of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL).
In a statement, the DMTCL informed commuters that services are now operational, ending the uncertainty that left many passengers stranded at station gates.
Earlier in the day, many passengers were seen returning disappointed from station gates, as operations were halted from 3pm.
Since noon, DMTCL officers and staff had gathered at the company's Uttara Diabari headquarters to protest the authorities' failure to finalise and publish an autonomous employment regulation within the previously announced deadline.
DMTCL Managing Director Faruque Ahmed attempted to engage in dialogue with the protesters but later returned to his office, according to witnesses.
At one point, agitating employees blocked the MD inside his room, taking positions in front of the entrance as tensions escalated.
In a statement later in the day, the protesters said they have suspended their protests till 18 December.
If their demands are not met by 18 December, they warned of tougher protests.
