Medical team vetoes sending Khaleda abroad until health more stable
Meanwhile, the air ambulance arranged to transfer the ailing BNP chairperson to London will not arrive in Dhaka today (9 December)
The medical team is not considering sending BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia abroad for advanced treatment until her health reaches a more stable point, a member of her medical board said.
He said that although her health shows signs of gradual progress, the improvement is not significant, and recovery will take time due to her age and multiple long-standing complications. Her condition also remains unpredictable.
"As soon as one complication stabilises, another emerges," he added.
"Although her prolonged liver issues are currently under control, deteriorating kidney function remains the primary concern. She continues to require regular dialysis, and her condition worsens whenever the dialysis is paused," the doctor said.
Daily tests have been conducted since her admission to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU). While her vital indicators are not worsening, she is still far from risk-free, he said.
"She is receiving advanced treatment in the CCU, and the board meets every night to review her condition," the board member added.
During these meetings, specialists monitor all medical reports and adjust medications when required — sometimes stopping a drug, resuming it later, or modifying its dosage.
Khaleda Zia's daughter-in-law, Dr Zubaida Rahman, is also attending the board meetings in person following her return home.
"We have continued our highest-level efforts to arrange Khaleda Zia's treatment abroad, following the advice of the medical board. It is true that the Qatari air ambulance could not arrive due to a technical fault, and the medical board also felt it would not be appropriate to fly her at this time," Khaleda Zia's personal physician, Prof Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, said while briefing the media in front of Evercare Hospital on Saturday (6 December).

The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) had earlier cleared the aircraft to land at 8:20am today and depart at around 9pm the same day.
The development comes after the operator requested cancellation of its previously approved landing schedule at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA).
