Mahfuz Anam urges code of conduct for media owners, investors to ensure independent journalism
Media owners and investors cannot treat media houses like ordinary commercial ventures, says Mahfuz Anam, the editor of The Daily Star.
Mahfuz Anam, the editor of The Daily Star, has called for a clear code of conduct for media owners and investors, saying such a framework is necessary for journalists to practise independent and unbiased journalism.
He made the remarks at a media convention jointly organised by the Editors' Council and the Newspaper Owners' Association of Bangladesh (Noab), which began this morning (17 January) in Dhaka.
The convention is being held in protest against recent incidents of mob violence and what organisers described as attacks on democratic values and freedom of expression, as well as to call for a united stance for courageous journalism.
Mahfuz reiterated the need for a clear and formal code of conduct for media owners and investors so that journalists can work independently and without bias.
Addressing the event, he said media owners and investors cannot treat media houses like ordinary commercial ventures, emphasising that journalism cannot be driven by owners' interests if it is to gain and retain the trust of the public.
Describing journalists as "social doctors," he said their duty is to identify, highlight, and help address the problems of society through responsible reporting.
Turning to the judiciary, he urged openness to free and constructive criticism from the press, arguing that a free and responsible media is one of the strongest foundations of a free and accountable judicial system.
Dewan Hanif Mahmud, editor of the daily Bonik Barta and general secretary of the council, is hosting the event.
According to the organisers, Bangladesh has recently witnessed a series of organised incidents of violence, including mob attacks, which they described as unprecedented assaults on freedom of expression and democratic principles.
The convention aims to register a united protest against such incidents and to reaffirm support for independent, responsible and courageous journalism.
It will also focus on safeguarding a democratic media environment, ensuring the safety of journalists, and upholding the professional dignity and rights of media workers.
