On Wednesday, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor, Md Atiqul Islam, warned of taking stern action against land grabbers within the city corporation's jurisdiction.

If any DNCC councilors are involved in such illegal activities, tougher legal action would also be taken against them, he said.

The mayor said this in response to questions from reporters after he visited the under construction development work in the Kallyanpur Storm Water Pumping Station area of the capital.

"The DNCC is earnestly working at ridding the city of waterlogging," the mayor said, adding that planned waterways are needed to get rid of this problem.

"We have acquired lands to create waterways but many illegal structures have been built on these lands by land grabbers," Atiqul Islam said.

"They must release these lands. Otherwise we will conduct drives to demolish their illegal establishments without serving them any notice," the mayor warned.

The DNCC mayor also said, "The time is right and we all should raise our voices against land grabbing. Together, we will recover all our lands from these grabbers."
