Man succumbs to injury after being beaten on suspicion of theft in Gazipur

A 24-year-old man died at a hospital in Gazipur's Shreepur Upazila on Thursday (26 September) after being seriously beaten over theft allegations on 13 September.
The victim Md Israfil, son of Md Nasir Uddin of Banshbari village in Gazipur union of the upazila, died on Thursday afternoon while undergoing treatment at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur.
Israfil's father lodged a written complaint with Shreepur police against Kamrul Hasan Liton, Babul Mandal, Shafiqul Islam in this incident on 16 September.
After he died on Thursday, the case was registered as a murder case, said Md Zainal Abedin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shreepur police station.
10-12 unknown individuals have also been accused in the case.
The main accused is Kamrul Hasan Liton, 50, son of the late Monir Uddin from Shailat village. He served as the general secretary of BNP Ward No 2 in Gazipur Union.
Relatives of the deceased stated that Israfil was sleeping in his living room on 13 September morning. Around 7am, some local youths, including Sohag, woke him and questioned him about a stolen battery from the Bepari Bari Jame Masjid. They then took him to the grounds of Shailat Paschimpara Government Primary School, near his home, where they bound his hands and feet with ropes.
Then Israfil was subjected to medieval torture for allegedly stealing batteries. Later, they poured hot water below the waist of Israfil.
Later, his relatives took him to the hospital.
The officer in charge stated that legal action is being initiated in this matter.
