Man sentenced to life for raping woman in capital
State Prosecutor Md Ershad Alam confirmed the information, saying the convict was present in court when the verdict was announced and was later sent back to jail with a conviction warrant.
A Dhaka tribunal has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping a woman in the city's Kafrul area. Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 delivered the verdict today (12 March).
The convict, Md Jahangir Hossain, 32, was also fined Tk200,000.
The court also instructed the district magistrate to recover the fine by selling the convict's movable and immovable properties and hand the money over to the victim.
State Prosecutor Md Ershad Alam confirmed the information, saying the convict was present in court when the verdict was announced and was later sent back to jail with a conviction warrant.
According to the case statement, Jahangir was an acquaintance of the victim, whose husband had died 11 months prior to the incident.
Taking advantage of their relationship, Jahangir first raped her on 15 January 2018 at a house in Ibrahimpur. When the victim tried to inform others of the incident, he gave her a false promise of marriage but continued the abuse under this pretext.
The victim became pregnant after the final incident on 17 January 2019. When Jahangir refused to marry her, she filed a case in February 2019.
An investigation by Kafrul police included a DNA test, which proved that Jahangir was the biological father of the victim's son.
The judge also ruled that the convict's assets be used to pay for the child's maintenance until he turns 21.
If the assets are not enough, the state will cover the costs. The tribunal reached its decision after hearing testimonies from five witnesses.
