 Man sentenced to death for raping, killing niece

A court here on Thursday sentenced a man to death for killing his niece after rape in 2010.

The convict, 60-year-old Nur Mohammad, is a resident of Noli Tulatala village in Mathbaria upazila. The Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal also fined him Tk 1 lakh.

According to the prosecution, the convict took his niece Amena, 14, to a bamboo groove on March 21, 2010, where he raped the victim.

Nur later clubbed the girl to death when she threatened to inform others about the incident and dumped her body in a nearby canal.

Locals later recovered the body and informed police. Amena’s mother Fatema filed a case over the incident. Police submitted chargesheet against the convict on May 31, 2010.

Nur had also confessed to his crimes before the court.
