A man identified as Zahir, 35, has been beaten to death by locals while attempting to hijack a battery-run rickshaw by attacking the driver in Munshiganj's Srinagar upazila.

Two others injured in the mob beating are in critical condition.

Zahir died while receiving treatment at the Upazila Health Complex around 11am today (29 March). Earlier at dawn, he was beaten by locals while attempting to hijack a battery-run rickshaw.

"Four people boarded the battery-run rickshaw of Mohsin Mia, 42, in the Tantar area early this morning. Midway through the journey, one of them held a knife to the driver's throat and hijacked the vehicle," said Shakil Ahmed, officer-in-charge (OC) of Srinagar Police Station.

He said nearby residents caught the other three suspects and beat them after hearing the driver screaming.

Upon receiving the information, police took the seriously injured driver and the three suspects to the health complex, where one of them died. The deceased, Zahir, was a resident of the district's Gazaria upazila.

The other two injured suspects are also in critical condition. They have been identified as Jafar, 32, from the Kalkini area of Madaripur and Arif Shikdar, 33, from the Muladi area of Barishal.

The OC said they all lived in rented accommodations in the South Keraniganj area.

Legal proceedings regarding the incident are underway, he added.
