Man drowns in Turag River while fleeing after setting bus on fire in Mirpur

A man has died after allegedly setting fire to a parked bus and falling into the Turag River while trying to flee from locals in Mirpur's Beribadh area on Thursday night (13 November), police said.
The incident occurred around 10:30pm in front of Tamanna Park, where miscreants reportedly set fire to a Kironmala Paribahan bus that was parked by the roadside, according to Shah Ali police.
Shah Ali Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Md Matiur Rahman said locals chased two people after they set fire to the bus.
"They managed to catch one red-handed, while the other jumped into the river while trying to escape. It is believed that the man drowned as he could not swim," he said.
The deceased was identified as Saiaf, 18, while the other who was caught by locals was identified as Nahian Amir Sonny, 18.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Anwar Hossain of Shah Ali Police Station said, "As the bus was set on fire, locals chased the suspects. One of them fell into the Turag River while trying to escape and was later recovered dead. Another suspect was caught by locals and handed over to the police."
Eyewitness Md Shakil said locals chased two men seen setting the bus on fire. "We managed to catch one of them, while the other jumped into the river. He was later pulled out, but there were no signs of life," he said.
