According to police, the victim and the accused were neighbours and a prior dispute may have led to the incident
A 21-year-old man was beaten to death on suspicion of duck theft in Maligaon village of Cumilla's Daudkandi upazila last night (3 February).
The deceased was identified as Saidul Islam, son of Md Alauddin, a resident of the same village.
Police said they have arrested Jasim Uddin and Omar Sunny in connection with the incident. Jasim Uddin is the president of the local Maligaon ward BNP, according to police.
Daudkandi Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Abdul Halim said a case has been filed against eight people in connection with the incident.
"We have sent the body for autopsy and are investigating the matter thoroughly," the OC said, adding that the victim and the accused were neighbours and that previous enmity may have played a role.
Further arrests may follow based on the investigation, he added.
According to police and local sources, Saidul was detained by a group of locals around 11:30pm on Tuesday on suspicion of stealing a duck belonging to a neighbour. He was allegedly beaten and later lost consciousness.
He was taken to Daudkandi Upazila Health Complex where he died few moments later. His body was later sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for autopsy today (4 February).
Saidul's father alleged that his son was called out over the theft allegation and beaten severely.
"They killed my son without giving him a chance to speak. I want justice," he said.
Daudkandi Upazila Health Officer Dr Habibur Rahman said the victim was brought to the health complex in a critically injured condition and died in the early hours today.
"He had sustained head injuries," the doctor said.
