Joint Secretary General of Hefazat-e-Islam Mamunul Haque has deceived the state, the government, and Islam, said police.

"He tried to seize state power, taking innocent Madrasah students to the streets with his provocative speech," Harun-Ur-Rashid, deputy commissioner (DC) of Tejgaon Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), made the remarks this afternoon during a briefing on Mamunul's interrogation at his office in the capital.

He further added that Mamunul admitted to beating pro-Saad Tablig supporters. He also admitted that he had made defamatory speeches about prominent citizens in his speeches at Waz Mahfils.

Earlier at 11.45am, Barrister Mahbubur Rahman, additional inspector general of Police (CID), told a press conference at the CID office that Hefazat leader Mamunul Haque was involved in a sabotage incident in Narayanganj during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Dhaka visit on the occasion of the golden jubilee of Bangladesh's Independence.

CID will plead for remanding him in connection with the incident, Barrister Mahbubur Rahman added.

It was said in the briefing that if Mamunul is found to have been involved in clashes and killings in different parts of the country, including Dhaka, on March 25 and 26, to protest Narendra Modi's visit to Dhaka, he will also be remanded in those cases.

A Dhaka court on Monday placed Hefezat-e-Islam's Joint Secretary General Mamunul Haque on a 7 day remand, a day after his arrest in a vandalism case filed with Mohammadpur police station in 2020.
