A group of armed miscreants attempted to loot an industrial facility belonging to Abul Khair Group in Chattogram's Sitakunda upazila, vandalising offices and injuring a security guard during the attack, police said.
The incident took place at AKS Steel mill in the Shitalpur area around 1am on Thursday, according to a case filed with Sitakunda Model Police Station on Saturday (28 February).
Police said a security staff member of the factory filed the case, naming 10 individuals and accusing 15 to 20 unidentified others. The accused include Md Rajib alias Bailyya, 35; Md Raju, 30; Manna, 33; Rabiul Hossain, 33; Md Bacha Mia, 23; Md Iman (1), 23; Suman, 18; Iman (2), 20; Rakib, 20; and Md Faruk, 22, among others.
Officer-in-Charge Md Mohinul Islam confirmed the matter, saying police have launched an investigation.
According to the complaint, a gang of 10 to 15 robbers entered the factory premises and attempted to loot scrap iron and rods. During the attack, they allegedly assaulted night guard Khaten Tripura, office staff member Abdul Motaleb, and several workers, leaving them injured.
The attackers also vandalised the factory office and main gate, officials said.
Factory authorities said the situation changed after night guards used loudspeakers to alert nearby residents and call for help. Local men and women rushed to the scene, prompting the attackers to flee.
Imrul Kader Bhuiyan, deputy general manager and HR admin in-charge of Abul Khair Group, said an organised armed group carried out the attempted robbery. "Workers sought assistance from local residents, who came forward immediately. The robbers fled the scene," he said.
OC Mohinul Islam said police are working to identify and arrest those involved. "A case has been filed on behalf of the factory authorities, and an investigation is underway," he added.
