The officer said there was no prior connection between the victim and those involved in the beating.
Police have said that lawyer Naim Kibria, 35, died after being assaulted twice following a collision dispute in Dhaka's Bashundhara Residential Area.
One of the accused, Md Jobayer Hossain, 29, has given a confessional statement in court admitting his involvement in the beating, they added.
Vatara Police Station Inspector Md Mehedi Hasan, the investigating officer of the case, told The Business Standard that Jobayer, arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), gave his confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure to Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana yesterday afternoon (5 January). In his statement, Jobayer admitted to beating the lawyer.
The officer said there was no prior connection between the victim and those involved in the beating. According to the confession, the assault took place in a fit of rage following a minor incident.
Describing the incident, Inspector Mehedi said that on the day of the incident, Naim allegedly hit a motorcycle with his car in the Bashundhara Residential Area and drove away.
When asked to stop, he did not comply. Subsequently, Jobayer and several others chased his car on motorcycles and intercepted him at the entrance of Road No 7 in Block I of Bashundhara, according to him.
The assailants dragged Naim out of his car and beat him indiscriminately. After the first round of assault, they put him on a motorcycle and took him to Road No 15 of Block I, where he was beaten again, Mehedi said.
He died as a result of the injuries sustained during the second assault, he added.
The killing took place on the night of 31 December in the Bashundhara Residential Area.
Naim was the son of Golam Kibria from Pabna Sadar upazila and was practising as a lawyer at the Pabna District and Sessions Judge's Court.
Following the killing, the victim's father filed a murder case at Vatara Police Station against unidentified persons.
On 4 January, RAB arrested Jobayer in the Vatara area of Dhaka and later turned him over to the police.
