Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan today (17 July) praised the role of law enforcement during the yesterday's violent clashes in Gopalganj, stating that the forces acted responsibly and ensured the safe evacuation of individuals from the area.

"From what I have observed, law enforcement agencies in Gopalganj performed commendably. They successfully ensured the safe return of everyone from the scene of the attack," he told reporters after a workshop held at the multipurpose hall of the BIDA in the capital's Agargaon.

The workshop was jointly organised by Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

What police report says on Gopalganj violence

Meanwhile, Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, special assistant to the chief adviser, clarified that no internet shutdown had occurred during the Gopalganj incident. "The internet was not shut down during the Gopalganj unrest. The government does not support cutting internet access under any circumstances."

Yesterday, at least four people were killed and several others injured in clashes between police and activists of Awami League and its associate bodies over a rally of the National Citizen Party (NCP) in Gopalganj.

The government has since imposed a curfew in the area.
