Kyrgyzstan wants to hire skilled manpower from Bangladesh for its production-oriented industries, Prime Minister's Private Industry and Investment Adviser Salman F Rahman said on Monday (22 April).

Besides, the Central Asian country also wants to strengthen economic relations with Bangladesh, he said at a media briefing yesterday after a meeting with the visiting Kyrgyz Deputy Foreign Minister Avazbek Atakhanov in the capital.

The adviser said there is scope for increasing cooperation between the two countries in various sectors including ready-made clothing industry and education.

"Both countries want to use these opportunities. Besides, the two countries can also work in the agriculture and technology sectors," he added.

Rahman also mentioned that about a thousand Bangladeshi medical students are studying in Kyrgyzstan. The country expects more students from Bangladesh.

He further said Kyrgyzstan worked with the European Union during the Covid-19 pandemic period to create capacity and is exporting garments to the EU.

"They have expressed their desire to jointly export garments to the European Union with Bangladesh," he added.

Avazbek Atakhanov praised the ongoing socio-economic development of Bangladesh at the briefing and said the Kyrgyz prime minister wants to visit Bangladesh.

In another development, Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud requested Kyrgyzstan to support Bangladesh for signing the free trade agreement (FTA) with Eurasian Economic Commission and also to support Bangladesh's candidatures in different international fora.

He made the request when Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic Avazbek Atakhanov paid a courtesy call on him at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday.

Minister Hasan mentioned that there are a lot of scopes for increasing the volume of bilateral trade between the two countries and requested Kyrgyzstan to import garments, pharmaceuticals, jute products, tropical fruits, ceramics, IT products, etc. from Bangladesh.

The foreign minister sought Kyrgyzstan's assistance for repatriation of the Rohingyas to their homeland. He reaffirmed Bangladesh's support to the legitimate aspiration of the Palestinian people for independent statehood, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
