Shipbreaking sector to get govt support in green transition: Khosru
The two sides discussed the current state, prospects, and challenges facing the sector.
Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has assured continued government support to advance Bangladesh's shipbreaking industry, which is increasingly shifting towards environmentally compliant green recycling practices.
The assurance came during a meeting with leaders of the Bangladesh Ship Breakers and Recyclers Association at the minister's residence in Mehedibag, Chattogram, on Friday evening, according to a press release.
In the meeting, the industry leaders outlined the sector's growth prospects and the challenges it faces, seeking government support to realise its potential.
They also briefed the minister on ongoing efforts to upgrade ship recycling yards in line with the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, noting that several facilities have already met global standards.
Affirming their commitment to ensuring safe and environmentally sound recycling practices, the industry representatives said Bangladesh has made notable progress in establishing green ship recycling facilities.
The minister expressed satisfaction with the sector's progress and listened to the concerns raised by the representatives. He assured that necessary steps would be taken to address existing challenges and support sustainable growth.
