Keraniganj madrasah blast: 3 women sent to jail after remand

A Dhaka court today (1 January) sent three women to jail after completion of their remand in connection with an explosion at a madrasah building in the Hasnabad Housing area of Keraniganj.
Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Tajul Islam Sohag passed the order, confirmed prosecution Sub-Inspector AB Siddiq.
The investigation officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Jahirul Islam of South Keraniganj Police Station, produced the accused before the court after their three-day remand and sought their detention in jail.
The women sent to jail are Asia Begum, 28, wife of madrasah director Al Amin; Yasmin Akhter, 30, wife of his elder brother; and Asmani Khatun, 34.
Earlier, on 28 December, the court granted a three-day remand for the three women. On the same day, the court also granted a seven-day remand for three other accused; Shaheen alias Abu Bakar, 32, Aminur alias Darji Amin, 50, and Shafiar Rahman Fakir, 36.
Police arrested the accused on 27 December from different areas of South Keraniganj. During the operation, law enforcers recovered around 400 litres of liquid chemicals stored in several drums, four crude bomb-like objects, a laptop, and two monitors from the premises.
Following the incident, madrasah director and prime accused Sheikh Al Amin has been on the run.
According to the case statement, a powerful explosion occurred inside Ummul Qura International Madrasah at around 10:25am on 26 December, causing parts of the room's walls and roof to collapse and debris to scatter in the surrounding area.
After receiving the information, multiple teams, including the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Crime Scene Unit, Anti-Terrorism Unit, Bomb Disposal Unit, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and fire service rushed to the spot and launched a large-scale recovery and evidence collection operation.
After a two-day operation, investigators recovered a huge cache of bomb-making materials from a rented house used by the fugitive Al Amin.
The seized items included hydrogen peroxide, acetone, nitric acid, white powder, several containers of chemicals, nine fresh crude bomb-wrapped in black plastic, around 400 litres of liquid chemicals, and a large quantity of explosive-making equipment.
Sub-Inspector Md Liton of South Keraniganj Police Station filed the case under the Anti-Terrorism Act in connection with the incident.
