Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque has announced a special fund to support the families of those killed and injured in the fire at an unauthorised gas lighter factory in South Keraniganj last night (4 April).
"The families of each deceased worker will receive Tk2 lakh in financial support. Injured and hospitalised workers will be provided up to Tk1 lakh each to cover medical expenses," Minister Ariful told the media after conducting an on-site inspection of the spot in the Kadamtali Gol Chattar area last night.
During the visit, he inquired about the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage, and expressed deep condolences to the families of the workers who lost their lives or were injured in this tragic incident.
To uncover the exact cause of the fire and identify those responsible, the minister has instructed the formation of a five-member investigation committee led by a joint secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
The committee has been asked to submit a detailed report within five working days, the minister said.
Simultaneously, the deputy commissioner of Dhaka district has also been directed to submit a separate report on the incident.
The minister said the government is fully committed to workers' welfare and added, "Following the directives of the prime minister, the government will continue its efforts to ensure workers' safety and improve their livelihoods."
He emphasised that strict measures will be taken to prevent any worker's life from being endangered due to negligence.
