July killings will be tried under interim govt: Asif Nazrul

Law Affairs Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul reiterated that the trial of the killings during last year's July uprising will be completed within the tenure of the interim government.

"The trials at the International Crimes Tribunal are progressing swiftly, and there will be no negligence," he said while inaugurating the country's first "July Shaheed Smritistambha" in Narayanganj today (14 July).

The memorial honours those killed and injured during the 36-day-long uprising that led to the fall of the Awami League government.

Asif Nazrul said alongside tribunal proceedings, multiple cases are under investigation in criminal courts across the country.

He added that the Narayanganj superintendent of police has assured him that charge sheets in several local cases are likely to be submitted before 5 August, the first anniversary of the uprising.

The adviser also mentioned the possibility of trials under speedy trial act, if necessary.

Reflecting on the uprising, the adviser remarked, "A dictatorship that lasted 15 and a half years was dismantled in just 15 days through the united will of the people."

Nazrul also expressed concern over recent incidents of violence and extortion in various localities, calling on citizens to stay united and resist these elements, with support from the administration.

The memorial event was attended by Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, Education Adviser CR Abrar, and several senior civil servants, including Public Administration Secretary Dr Md Mokhlesur Rahman and Housing Secretary Md Nazrul Islam.

The advisers laid floral wreaths and met with families of those killed, expressing solidarity and pledging continued support.
