Joint forces arrested Jubo League leader Motabber Hossain Jony, the nephew of former Burichang upazila chairman Akhlak Haider, over alleged illegal possession of weapons in Cumilla.

He was arrested last night (3 October) from Sunduriapara in Burichang upazila's Moynamati union.

Confirming the arrest, Burichang Police Station Officer-in-Charge Azizul Haque said, "There is a case filed against him. We will file a new case under the Arms Act and send him to court."

"Based on secret information, the joint forces, led by the army, launched an operation in Sunduriapara in the early hours today, targeting those involved in criminal activities, and arrested Jony. The operation will continue until all illegal weapons are seized and criminals are arrested," Azizul added.

Law enforcers seized one foreign airgun, 14 local swords, a metal disc, three knives, five sticks, and cash worth Tk4.5 lakh from Jony's possession.

He was later handed over to Burichang Police Station along with the recovered items.

Jony was reportedly in control of the transport sector along the Cumilla-Brahmanbaria regional road for a long time, operating his bus company, Farzana Transport.

He was also allegedly involved in firing on protesters during the student movement. He served as a Jubo League leader in Burichang upazila, and his family has strong political ties, with his eldest uncle, Akhlak Haider, being a former chairman of Burichang upazila parishad, another uncle a former member of Cumilla zilla parishad, and his youngest uncle the current chairman of Moynamati union parishad.
