Jubo Dal leader killed in clash over land dispute in Sunamganj
A Jubo Dal leader was killed in a clash between two groups over a land dispute in Jamalabaj village under Joykolosh union of Shantiganj upazila in Sunamganj this morning (15 June).
The deceased was identified as Nazrul Islam, 40, vice-president of the local union unit of Jubo Dal and son of the late Abdul Hasim from Jamalabaj village.
Confirming the incident, Shantiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Akram Ali said, "Nazrul Islam died as a result of a clash over a land dispute. His body has been kept at Sunamganj Sadar Hospital for autopsy."
Police have detained Azad Mia, 60, in connection with the incident, the OC said, adding that efforts are underway to arrest others involved.
According to locals and police sources, a long-standing dispute had existed between Nazrul and his cousin Taj Uddin over ancestral property. Around 8am today, a heated argument broke out between Nazrul's mother Aftabjan Banu and members of Taj Uddin's family over placing a sack near the boundary of their homesteads. The dispute quickly escalated, and members of both families engaged in a violent clash using sharp weapons.
At one point, Nazrul was stabbed in the chest, and his brother Jalal Hossain sustained serious injuries. Both were rushed to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared Nazrul dead.
Police later arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.
