Jatiya Nagorik Committee condemns attack on KUET students

The Jatiya Nagorik Committee has strongly condemned the brutal attack on Khulna Engineering and Technology University (KUET) students by members of the Jatiotabadi Chatradal along with local and outside BNP leaders, during a protest organised by students demanding a ban on student politics.
The committee in a statement today (18 February) demanded that those responsible for the attack be swiftly arrested and brought under the law, and called for immediate disciplinary measures against the involved party functionaries.
"We firmly believe that the decision on whether student politics should continue on campus must rest solely with the students. Those who resort to terrorism and violent acts to stifle free expression and disrupt the academic environment must be held accountable," the committee said.
The committee reiterated its support for any legitimate protest by students and called on all citizens to stand in solidarity with them.
Earlier today, a clash erupted between the Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) students and Jatiotabadi Chatradal at the campus area over the demand to ban student politics on campus.
According to eyewitnesses, a campaign by the Jatiotabadi Chatradal, student body of the BNP, started on campus this morning, which led to protests by a group of students who opposed student politics.
Later, the two groups had a confrontation in front of the campus's central Jame Mosque, escalating into a clash. They also hurled bricks amid a chase and counter-chase.
According to a Prothom Alo report quoted by Chatradal leaders and a leader of Students Against Discrimination, at least 30 people were injured during the clash. However, The Business Standard could not confirm the number.
