Jashore hit by cold wave as temperature hovers near 10°C
Cold wave disrupts daily life, threatens agriculture
Jashore has been reeling under a persistent cold wave for the last ten days, with the minimum temperature hovering around 10°C, causing hardship in daily life.
Dense fog and icy northern winds have intensified the severity of the cold, disrupting normal activities across the district.
On Monday (5 January), the minimum temperature in Jashore was recorded at 10°C, according to the Jashore Air Force Meteorological Office.
On the same day, the country's lowest temperature was recorded in Chuadanga at 9.2°C.
A day earlier, on Sunday, Jashore's minimum temperature stood at 9.6°C.
In the past few days, temperatures in the district dipped even further.
On Thursday and Friday, the minimum temperature fell to 7.8°C and 8°C respectively, marking the lowest temperatures in the country on those days.
The cold northern wind continued to make conditions biting cold throughout the day, affecting people's movement and livelihoods.
Day labourers and low-income workers have been among the worst affected.
Bablu Akter, a day labourer waiting for work at the Laldighi area of the town, said the cold weather has reduced job opportunities, and working in such conditions has become increasingly difficult.
The cold wave has also begun to take a toll on agriculture in the district.
Officials from the Jashore regional agriculture office said continuous cold and dense fog have put vegetable seedbeds and boro paddy cultivation at risk.
Farmers fear that if the fog persists, seedlings may be damaged, leading to crop losses.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, temperatures between 8.1°C and 10°C are classified as a mild cold wave.
