Jashore celebrates as Amit joins cabinet, following father’s legacy
Over 17 years, he led anti-fascist movements, earning the trust of party activists and eventually becoming the assistant organising secretary and later acting organising secretary of the BNP’s Khulna division.
Joy and celebrations swept through Jessore yesterday as Anindya Islam Amit, member of parliament for Jessore-3, was appointed State Minister for the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources.
Activists gathered at the party office in the Lal Dighi area soon after the announcement, distributing sweets and chanting slogans. A procession organised by the district BNP in the evening moved through key city streets before returning to the party office. Supporters said Amit's appointment would boost development in Jashore and the surrounding region.
Amit follows in the footsteps of his late father, Tariqul Islam, a former BNP Standing Committee member and a minister in Khaleda Zia's cabinet. Amit began his political career under his father's guidance as a grassroots member of Jashore BNP and later played a key role in maintaining party unity following his father's passing.
Over 17 years, he led anti-fascist movements, earning the trust of party activists and eventually becoming the assistant organising secretary and later acting organising secretary of the BNP's Khulna division.
In the 13th national parliamentary election on 12 February, Amit won Jashore-3 on the Dhanshish (paddy sheaf) symbol, receiving 201,339 votes against 187,463 for his closest rival, Md Abdul Kader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
Amit holds degrees in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of Dhaka and an MBA from North South University. He is the managing director of Labscan Medical Services Limited and Loksamaj Limited and maintains memberships in various professional and community organisations in Jashore and beyond.
