Jamaat's Shafiqur elected opposition leader, Nahid to serve as chief whip
Taher will serve as deputy leader of the opposition
Shafiqur Rahman, the ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has been elected as the leader of the opposition in the 13th parliament by the Parliamentary Party of the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance.
National Citizen Party Convener Nahid Islam will serve as the opposition chief whip, sources said, citing the decisions taken at the parliamentary party meeting held this afternoon (17 February) following the oath-taking of the 77 MPs of the alliance.
The 11-party alliance is expected to announce the decision officially through a joint press release soon.
According to multiple alliance MPs, Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher will serve as deputy leader of the opposition, and Rafiqul Islam Khan will take up the role of opposition whip.
The leader of the opposition will enjoy the same perks and facilities of a minister, while the deputy leader of the opposition will get the same of a state minister.
