The government's inter-ministerial committee, formed to address the issue of politically motivated cases, has so far recommended the withdrawal of 11,448 such cases.

The committee, chaired by Law Ministry Adviser Asif Nazrul, was established on 22 September 2024, and since then has held 16 meetings since then to assess case documents and recommendations from district-level committees and the Solicitor's Office, reads a press release of the law ministry.

Despite criticism from various political parties accusing the government of delaying the process, officials have stated that the committee is actively working through a structured review of submitted case lists and legal documents, added the statement.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) submitted a list of nearly 16,000 cases between 10 to 14 January, while Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami submitted a list of 1,200 cases on 27 April. Around half of these cases have already been recommended for withdrawal by the committee on its own initiative.

However, further action on the remaining cases has been delayed due to the absence of essential documents such as FIRs and charge sheets.

Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh recently submitted a list of 44 cases on 20 May and those are currently under review for expedited processing.

In the interest of swift resolution, the committee has called on all political parties to promptly submit complete documentation, including FIRs and charge sheets where applicable, for the cases they have listed.
