Roads in Gazipur City Corporation will be named after freedom fighters and holding tax on their homes will also be waived, said City Mayor Mohammad Jahangir Alam.

He said this while addressing a reception of freedom fighters at the city's Bangataj Auditorium on Tuesday afternoon.

The mayor said the city corporation had taken an initiative to change the names of those roads which had been named after "fake" freedom fighters, adding, "We will change them with the names of 'actual' freedom fighters."

He also declared that some educational institutions would be named after freedom fighters.

Remembering the extraordinary sacrifice of freedom fighters, Jahangir said, "To pay our tribute to the brave souls, we are making medical treatment free for freedom fighters in this month of victory."

"Alongside waiving holding tax, we are also providing their children with jobs and business opportunities here," the mayor added.

He hoped this initiative would enable heroic freedom fighters to witness their children's wellbeing in the country they had fought to liberate.

The reception organised by Gazipur City Corporation was chaired by the mayor while Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque addressed the crowd as the chief guest.

Deputy Commissioner of Gazipur SM Tariqul Islam, Deputy Police Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police Zakir Hasan, Metropolitan Awami League President Advocate Azmat Ullah Khan, Awami League leader Alimuddin Buddin, freedom fighter and Jatiya Party leader Abdus Sattar Mia, and freedom fighter Abdur Rauf Nayan were also present during the ceremony as special guests.
