Infant killed, parents injured as gas cylinder blast in Gazipur
The Doctors declared the child dead on arrival
An infant was killed and his parents sustained severe burn injuries in a gas cylinder explosion earlier today (3 August) in Gazipur's Mirer Bazar area.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Raihan, aged two and a half months. His father, Ripon Hossain, 23 and mother, Hafiza Akter, 20, are currently undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
Confirming the matter to The Business Standard, Pubail Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Amirul Islam said, "The explosion occurred around 4:30am when the family attempted to boil water to prepare milk for their child using a recently installed gas cylinder in the kitchen of their rented ground-floor apartment."
OC Amirul added, "Preliminary investigations suggest the blast was accidental and caused by a gas leak. Legal procedures are currently underway."
Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, a resident surgeon at the burn institute, said Ripon suffered burns on about 70% of his body, while Hafiza sustained 60% burns.
According to police and locals, Ripon and his family had moved into the flat just two days ago. As Ripon's wife attempted to ignite the stove, the cylinder reportedly leaked and exploded with a loud bang, setting the room ablaze.
The victims were first taken after being rescued by the neighbours to Tongi's Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital and later transferred to the Burn Institute in Dhaka due to the severity of their injuries.
There, the Doctors declared the child dead on arrival.
