An eight-month-old baby boy died after his parents jumped from a moving train in panic over a fire on board the Probal Express near Adhunagar station in Chattogram's Lohagara last night (15 April).

The infant, named Hamdan, died on the spot, while his parents, Abdur Razzak and Liza Akter, were seriously injured, said Shahidul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chattogram railway police station.

The incident occurred around 8:25pm when the Cox's Bazar-bound train was passing through Rashider Para area.

The fire started in the transmitter unit of "Tha" coach of the train. No one was injured in that coach, said OC Shahidul.

Railway staff, with help from local residents, managed to extinguish the fire within 15 minutes. However, panic spread to nearby coaches. Abdur Razzak and Liza, travelling in the adjacent "Kha" coach, reportedly panicked after hearing about the fire and jumped off the moving train with their infant son.

All three were taken to Lohagara Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared the baby dead. The injured couple has since been transferred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for further treatment.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
