ILO, BGMEA discuss collaboration on labour standards and sustainability

International Labour Organization (ILO) Country Director Tuomo Poutiainen met with Anwar Hossain, administrator of BGMEA, today (January) and discussed key issues in Bangladesh's ready-made garment (RMG) sector, including labour rights, workplace safety, and sustainability.

The meeting, held at the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Complex, highlighted ongoing ILO-led initiatives like the Better Work Bangladesh programme, which seeks to enhance working conditions and occupational safety for garment workers.

Discussions also emphasised aligning the RMG industry with international standards, including the European Union's Due Diligence Directive, which focuses on corporate accountability for human rights and environmental impacts across supply chains.

Anwar outlined the sector's significant strides in workplace safety and environmental sustainability while reiterating the industry's commitment to further progress.

He also urged the ILO to support projects aimed at fostering social dialogue, promoting harmonious industrial relations, and developing workforce skills to adapt to AI and technological advancements.

The meeting underscored the mutual commitment of the ILO and BGMEA to ensuring a safer, fairer, and more sustainable future for Bangladesh's RMG industry.
