A team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Friday detained Kalabagan Krira Chakra Club President Shafiqul Alam Firoz and four other club staff during a drive in the Kalabagan area of Dhaka.

The four detainees are Hafizul Islam, Harun, Anwar and Liton. Gambling chips, foreign pistols, 572 packets of playing cards, yellow yaba tablets and other casino material were also confiscated during the drive.

Confirming the matter to The Business Standard, RAB 2 Commanding Officer Lt Col Ashique Billah said Shafiqul was detained for questioning over the nature of activities that take place in the club.

"Shafiqul is a member of the Krishak League central committee. He sought nomination from Awami League to contest the Chandpur 5 constituency in the 2018 parliamentary election," said the RAB 2 commanding officer quoting club member Nannu Mia.

Meanwhile, RAB 2 Assistant Director Saiful Malik said the drive was launched on a tip-off over illegal gambling.

Earlier on Friday noon, RAB forces cordoned off the Kalabagan Krira Chakra club building.
