IHRC calls for action to prevent any communal activities over Ctg lawyer’s killing, Chinmoy’s arrest

The International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) Bangladesh Chapter has urged the interim government to take appropriate measures to prevent any group from engaging in communal activities related to the killing of a Chattogram lawyer and the arrest of former Iskcon Bangladesh leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari.

The rights body made the call in a statement issued today (28 November) signed by IHRC President MA Hashem Raju and Executive Director Saifuddin Salam Mithu.

In the statement, the IHRC also expressed deep concern over the killing of Saiful Islam Alif, an assistant public prosecutor, during an unrest that spilled outside the Chattogram court premises on 26 November centring the rejection of Chinmoy's bail.

"We are shocked and saddened by the tragic killing of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif on the court premises in Chattogram. We urge the government to take necessary measures to ensure such incidents do not recur in the future," reads the statement.

The statement also noted that the government has already taken steps to apprehend the criminals and urged all parties to uphold law and order and maintain religious harmony.

It emphasised the importance of everyone acting responsibly to safeguard human rights.
