'I have lost a piece of my heart,' says father as he buries his 2-year-old son Sajid
"I want justice for my son. The person responsible for leaving the tube-well shaft open should be punished, because it was due to his negligence that Sajid died,” said his father
The funeral of two-year-old Sajid, who was recovered from an abandoned deep tube-well shaft in Rajshahi's Tanore, was held this morning (12 December).
The janaza took place around 10:30am in a field at Koelhat Purbo Para village. A large number of people from neighbouring villages joined the prayers. He was later buried at the family graveyard in the same village.
From early morning, villagers of all ages gathered at Sajid's home, where a heavy pall of grief hung over the area. Relatives and neighbours broke down in tears, mourning the loss of the child.
Speaking at the funeral, Sajid's father, Rakib, requested prayers for his son and expressed gratitude to people across the country for their support.
Overcome with grief, he earlier said, "I have lost a piece of my heart. Even if I had the whole world, I would not get my Sajid back. I want justice for my son. The person responsible for leaving the tube-well shaft open should be punished, because it was due to his negligence that Sajid died."
The child passed away last night, leaving the entire nation in mourning. Fire Service and Civil Defence personnel recovered him at around 9:05pm from the abandoned tube-well shaft, about 50 feet deep, after digging through layers of earth. He was taken to Tanore Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
Sajid had fallen into the shaft around 1pm on Wednesday while walking behind his mother near a field close to their home. Fire Service and Civil Defence units began rescue efforts immediately and, after more than 32 hours of continuous work, managed to retrieve him in an unconscious state.
