Huge snake found in Mohakhali grocery store: A rescue network story
The snake was spotted inside a grocery shop at the Arjatpara market

A non-venomous rat snake was recently rescued from a grocery store in Dhaka's Mohakhali area yesterday (3 March).
The snake's presence served as a reminder of the teeming, yet secretive urban wildlife.
It also highlighted the efforts of a dedicated group of rescuers working across Bangladesh.
The snake was spotted inside a grocery shop at the Arjatpara market.
An individual immediately contacted the Wildlife and Snake Rescue Team in Bangladesh (WSRTBD).
Upon receiving the alert, Rasel Alam, WSRTBD's one of Dhaka district representatives, rushed to the location and successfully captured the snake.
Following the rescue, he conducted an awareness session for the gathered crowd.
A growing rescue network
The WSRTBD, a volunteer organisation dedicated to snake rescue and conservation, was founded in 2020 by a group of experienced rescuers, including Shahidul from Panchagarh and Shahjahan from Lalmonirhat.
Over time, the organisation expanded through online outreach and recruitment.
"Every year, we start a learner batch to train new members. Those who qualify become part of our team," said Md Jahidul Islam, WSRTBD's health affairs secretary.
He emphasised that the organisation is entirely volunteer-driven.
"We are all students, and this is a completely non-profit initiative. We don't pay anyone; instead, we contribute by ourselves – Tk50, Tk100, or whatever amount members can afford – to manage organisational costs," he said.
Jahidul said that WSRTBD operates nationwide, with members in every district ready to respond to rescue calls.
Urban snakes and their origins
The rat snake or Darash rescued in Mohakhali had a clearer explanation.
It had escaped from a snake charmer.
"Due to his carelessness, the snake got loose and hid in the shop. When they couldn't find it, they abandoned the search and left. Later when we were contacted, our rescuer, Rasel Alam, went to the spot and safely removed the snake," Jahidul explained.
But snakes appearing in Dhaka often originate from surrounding districts.
"They usually come from Gazipur, Narayanganj, and Keraniganj. These places are home to species like Poddo Ghokhra and Khoiya Gokhra," Jahidul said.
However, some species naturally inhabit Dhaka itself.
"There are certain non-venomous snakes that live within the city. So far, we haven't encountered any venomous snakes in Dhaka," he added.
With rapid urbanisation and habitat loss, snake rescues are becoming more common.
"If bitten by a snake, seek medical treatment, not a snake charmer," with this message WSRTBD is working tirelessly to protect snakes, a vital part of nature without fearing them.
WSRTBD not only saves these reptiles but also works to educate people about their importance in the ecosystem.
