Hilsa weighing 3.4kg sold for Tk10,000 in Lakshmipur
Buyer expects to sell it for Tk14,000-15,000 in Dhaka
A hilsa weighing 3.4 kilogrammes was sold for Tk10,000 at Ramgati fish market in Lakshmipur today (3 October).
The giant fish was caught in the net of fisherman Mofiz Majhi from Char Gazi union of Ramgati upazila. Around 12:30pm, the fish was auctioned at the Ramgati landing station, where local trader Oji Ullah Byapari purchased it as the highest bidder.
Mofiz Majhi, who went to sea three days earlier with 10 other fishermen, said they caught the fish while pulling up nets this morning. "Including this big hilsa, we sold fish worth around Tk2.5 lakh. But selling one fish alone for Tk10,000 made us very happy," he said.
Buyer Oji Ullah Byapari said, "I bought it for Tk10,000. If I send it to the Dhaka market, I expect to sell it for Tk14,000-15,000, since large hilsa have greater demand in the capital."
Local trader Musa Ahmed Himu said, "On the last day of the fishing expedition, such a big hilsa has brought joy to everyone. The news has already gone viral on social media."
Wholesaler Helal Byapari remarked, "We have never seen such a high price for a single hilsa before."
