Hefazat must take responsibility for mayhem: Brahmanbaria MP

The leaders and activists of Hefazat-e-Islam have to accept the responsibility for the mayhem Brahmanbaria went through on Sunday during the daylong hartal, said local lawmaker RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury.

"Whatever happens publicly on the day of the strike, the conveners have to take the responsibility. That is why the local leaders of Hefazat, who called for a strike, have to take the responsibility for what happened in the district yesterday," the lawmaker of Brahmanbaria-3 constituency said today during a meeting with reporters at Press Club.

Obaidul Moktadir Chowdhury said, "The politicians were exhausted on the day of the country's Golden Jubilee of Independence. It might be the same for the government officials too."

"But, the administration should have gathered the information and taken preparation to deal with any unpleasant situation," the lawmaker added.

He further said, "We were astonished to see the havoc wreaked by Hefazat men in district town after 3pm on Sunday. We want to identify the person who instigated them."

The activists of Hefazat-e-Islam went berserk in Brahmanbaria during hartal and attacked Jela Parishad, district Awami League, press club, Land office, municipality offices and some other private organisations during hartal. They also attacked Khatihata highway police station in Sarail.

Three hartal supporters were killed and dozens injured after they clashed with police and BGB in the district on the hartal day.
