Healthcare facility, 9 huts gutted in Rohingya camp fire
No casualties were reported in the incident.
A healthcare facility and nine shelters were reduced to ashes in a fire that broke out at a Rohingya camp in Ukhiya early this morning (26 December).
No casualties were reported in the incident.
The blaze originated at around 7am at the OBAT Health Post, a healthcare facility located in Sub-block 1, Block D of Rohingya Camp-4 in Ukhiya.
Dollar Tripura, station officer of Ukhiya Fire Service, confirmed that five firefighting units rushed to the spot immediately upon receiving the news.
According to him, it took approximately two hours of effort to bring the flames under complete control.
By the time the fire was extinguished, the health post was entirely gutted. The flames also spread to nine adjacent makeshift huts, which were burnt to the ground.
"Preliminary findings suggest the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit. However, the exact cause and the full extent of the financial damage are yet to be determined," the fire service official said.
"A thorough investigation will be conducted to confirm the origin of the fire and assess the total loss," he added.
