A female patient has died at a Gazipur hospital due to alleged wrong treatment today (13 November).

The deceased has been identified as Asia Khatun, 25, by her husband Amir Hamza, resident of Bhogra area of Gazipur.

The incident took place at the Holy Lab Medical Services Ltd at around 1:00pm, Hamza said, adding that officials of the hospital fled the institution immediately after the death of his wife.

Hamza said his wife died within two minutes of being injected a medicine at the hospital.

"My wife was suffering from tonsillitis for the last few days. We consulted Dr Mustafa of the hospital. He told us we can go for an operation any day we want to. Later that night we decided to go with the operation. Me and my youngest son brought my wife to the hospital today at around 12:00pm for the operation which was scheduled for 2:00pm," he said.

"They admitted my wife and asked me to bring some drugs. My wife was talking to me at the time. As soon as I bought the medicines, two nurses injected her with medicines in front of me. Right after, white foam started coming out of my wife's mouth. She started shaking her hands and feet and died within two minutes. Seeing this, everyone including the two women ran away," Hamza alleged.

Asia did not have any other issues except tonsillitis, said Hamza, a businessman. "My wife died due to their wrong treatment. What will I do now with my two little kids? How will I go on with my life? I want justice."

The hospital's managing director Abdullah Al Mamun could not be reached over the phone for a comment regarding the incident.

On a visit to the hospital, The Business Standard found that no health workers or officials of the institution were present there. Only a few peons were working to look after the admitted patients.

When contacted over the matter, Gazipur Sadar Police Station's Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Arifur Rahman said, "We sent a team to the hospital after being informed of the incident. The body of the deceased has been sent to the morgue to find out the reason for her death. Legal process over the incident is underway."
