To make healthcare smarter and more precise, the Labaid Group is developing AI-based healthtech solutions and plans to establish 30 satellite cancer centres across Bangladesh, Sakif Shamim, managing director of Labaid Cancer Hospital and Super Speciality Centre, told The Business Standard.
"We have a company called Labaid Artificial Intelligence, under which two digital healthcare platforms – VirtuCare BD and Life Plus Bangladesh – are operating. Life Plus has been one of the country's top 360-degree healthtech platforms for the past seven years, with around half a million users," said Sakif.
He added that the company has built its own large language model (LLM) trained on six to seven million datasets over the past year. "We have already developed two products – Labaid GPT and Luna," he said.
According to him, Labaid GPT is an AI-based second opinion system for doctors, which analyses tumour and other complications when a patient's report is uploaded. "It's already being used in our hospital, and we'll launch it for consumers next month."
"We're also developing an enterprise solution – another version similar to ChatGPT – that can analyse medical symptoms and provide instant authentic responses, which you'll not get from Google. This will be part of Labaid GPT, currently in the trial phase," Sakif explained.
Luna, meanwhile, is a personal AI assistant for professionals, designed to serve all industries. "It can offer sector-specific guidance – and it's open for everyone," he said.
The Labaid AI team has already filed eight patents, each with detailed 70–80-page documentation currently under international journal review. "If no objections are raised, we will be the first in the world with products of this kind," Sakif added.

Virtual hospital
Labaid is also developing a Virtual Hospital using augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) platforms for medical training, surgical simulation, and emergency practice.
"It will be a platform where a trainee can perform virtual operations, and the entire medical world can be connected," Sakif said.
Local developers creating AI solutions
"Our country's talented young developers are building these technologies. We trust our local developers. A few foreign professors and researchers are also advising us," he noted.
The Labaid AI team currently includes around 40 specialists, and their software solutions are being developed not only for Bangladesh but also for global markets targeting the Middle East, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos.
Expanding healthcare reach
Looking ahead, Sakif said Labaid plans to set up 30 satellite cancer centres nationwide to provide chemotherapy and radiation services.
Additionally, the company plans to build a 750-bed multi- and super-speciality hospital in Purbachal.
"To develop skilled professionals to operate these hospitals, Labaid is in discussions for technical and training support with Singapore General Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Mount Sinai New York," said Sakif.
